Recently made my first visit to the Ideal Place with my wife for a date night. I have to say that the restaurant lives up to its name. It has a pretty hip and clean atmosphere and is no where near looking like an Applebees (tasteful artwork displayed). The menu was rather limited, but of the two dishes we had the food was great. Everything is made fresh daily. I had a tomato bisque soup that was ridiculously good, but figured it probably only tasted good cause it was at a nice restaurant. I asked the waitress if it had come out of a can, and she assured me that it, along with the other food had been made that day. The wait staff was friendly and gave good advice in regards to the food, but they were rather hurried. You never felt like they had time to help you out or answer your questions. They seemed like they were running back and forth through the restaurant. I plan on returning to the Ideal Place with my wife again when I am in need of some brownie points.

Visited The Ideal Place while visiting relatives for the holidays. We actually ate here once years ago, and really enjoyed it then, too. We'd heard it had closed and were happy to discover it was open again when we were in town this week. Really impressive meal! The char-grilled oyster appetizer converted me to an oyster lover. I've never had more delicious oysters. I could have made a meal of just those. We split a lentil salad and the NY Strip for our dinner, and everything was excellent (lentil salad) to very good (the steak). Service was good--unobtrusive but attentive. The bottle of wine we shared was good though not great--but we lucked into a special where it was half off for the bottle, so it was certainly worth the price. All in all, we were very pleased, and a little surprised. We weren't sure what to expect, knowing that the place had been closed for an extended period. I'd recommend this place to anyone!

I have been to Ideal place many many times. The food is always excellent and the Menu changes on a weekly basis. I've never had a bad meal here. The restaurant itself is more upscale than most in the area. The service is always top notch as well. We were in here again on saturday night with a couple from Chicago. They were very impressed with the Ideal place and they are Chicago food snobs. Some of my favorite dishes. The Butterfish, Asian Ribs, Lobster Cake, Ahi Tuna, the Po-Boy sandwich. Even the deserts here are awesome. The bread pudding is unbelieveable and I don't even like bread pudding. The Blueberry Chocolate Cheesecake is also outstanding.

This has been on my list of places to try for awhile and finally got to this weekend. What a great place! I have not had a meal THIS good in quite awhile, actually all the meals at our table were great. I love the decor and atmosphere, casual but sophisticated and very welcoming. We sat at the bar for a cocktail and the bartender was very friendly and made great cosmos. Once seated we started with their version of Oysters Rockefeller, they were baked with a garlic, spinach, cheese covering. Delicious and light. For dinner I ordered the duck, which I have never ordered at a restaurant before so I was nervous since I was not even sure I even liked duck. No worries though, the duck was tender and juicy and beyond delicious. It came with a side of potatoes with goat cheese baked in and steamed vegetables that were cooked to perfection. I was so sad when it was gone! Other meals at the table were quality too; curry scallop and shrimp risotto, chicken pasta dish, and the veal osso bucco. Wine selection was good and the services was excellent. I look forward to getting back there soon.

My favorite business over drinks place (and former martini after yoga spot). Atmosphere is fantastic, chic (do people really use that word anymore) and friendly. The food is fresh, inventive and deliciously familiar. The menu is reinvented regularly, offering regulars an adventure in gastronomy, but also keeps the familiar on the menu to savor on those days when you just need some comfort food (like the New Orleans/Livery BBQ shrimp or the Beef Short Ribs. The Ideal Place is just that, the ideal place to enjoy an evening with friends and or colleagues. The only downfall is the noise level can be high at times.

This is by far the best food I have had in SW Michigan! Service is top notch too. If this place where in Chicago the prices would be at least double. I've been back a couple times now, which makes me look forward to when I'll go again. You owe it to yourself to go!

Not so hot. Like Port 412, this place attempts to be something it isn't - classy. The food isn't anything to write home about, and it's more pricey than it's worth.

I used to be a big fan of the Ideal Place back in the earlier 2000's. However, since the re-open a lot has been lacking and I've walked away from every dining experience let down. From the food to the service things just aren't up to par. Especially when you're paying $$ for the Benton Harbor area. Recently the menu has had a very Cajun flair. I understand the new chef/cook is from New Orleans. I don't mind having a few items on the menu having a Cajun flair but it seems the vast majority of the items are Cajun inspired. Also, what is the deal with the rude wait staff? I had a waiter bring me a red wine when I asked for white and then get annoyed when I asked for him to change. The last 2 times I've dined there we've had to wait a long time in between cocktails, salads and then dinner. Overall I think I'm done giving the Ideal Place chance after chance. I will spend my money elsewhere. But it does make me sad as I used to love this place.

I have been meaning to write this review for months. On a trip back from Chicago to Detroit, we stopped off in Benton Harbor for dinner and had a really surprising meal. My husband had a pasta dish that was perfect, I had the jambalaya. I used to live in New Orleans, and love jambalaya, but it's never on the menu. Particularly not in restaurants in Michigan, so I ordered it, thinking that I'd probably be disappointed, but it was exceptional. Just the right amount of heat, plenty of big chunks of sausage and shrimp. I couldn't have been more surprised or more pleased. I started with a salad with roasted beets. Can't remember what my husband had, but we thought everything was really good. Also liked the atmosphere. A little artsy, and more upscale than the usual beach town, burger/pub/saloon joints. All together an excellent find, and will definitely stop in on any trip to Illinois from now on.

My fiance and I went here for "date night" last week, and we LOVED it! Our server was attentive and very knowledgable, and the food was GREAT! We recommend the pork with blueberry salad...it sounds like a strange combo, but it was amazing. It is a little pricey, but worth it. We will definitely be back!

Good Stuff!! Tried this place based on the yelpers and I'm glad I did. Great little place with a somewhat limited menu. Started off with the NE clam chowder, tastey but had some grit : ( The waitress was raving about the short ribs but I had steak the night before so I was looking for some fish to mix it up, so I asked about the Grouper. The waitress suggested that I might like something else (and I always listen to these hints) and said "How about a soft shell crab po-boy?" So I went with it. Look, I'm not going to claim to be a po-boy expert, but I do know good food and this thing was fantastic!!! By the way it wasn't on the menu. Try this place out and listen to the wait staff, the waitress I had knew the menu and made a great suggestion!

I really want to like The Ideal Place, as I love the neighborhood. But my husband and I have had bad food experiences here not once, not twice, but three times. I'm not talking about bad tasting food, I'm talking about food that made one of us sick. I am certain the fish I ate last night led to one of the worst nights of food poisoning illness I have ever experienced. I want there to be a great restaurant in downtown BH, but this just isn't it.

According to the local BH newspaper today, the restaurant is supposed to reopen in early 2010. It will be the same owner as before.

Went there on a Monday, early for most diners and had a great meal. Could be 5 stars. Very close call. We had the Scallop appetizer and the sauce was awesome for dipping the fresh baked rolls. Scallops were perfect. Ordered the Ahi tuna and Greek Ratonni pasta with shrimp. All was excellent and the pasta was way too much to eat in one sitting. It had feta, artichoke and olives mixed in, and the shrimp had a wonderful grilled seasoning. Desert was a generous serving of apple crisp. One wine, one Knob Creek for starters and the bill, with tip, was $96. Does not accept AMEX.

One of the nicer restaurants in the St. Joe/Stevensville/BH area. Tonight we shared the grilled shrimp appetizer and the beet salad. My husband and I both enjoyed our main courses -- I had the Orange Roughy Picatta and he had the Bacon-Wrapped Red Snapper. Server was great. Only downside was the noise level, especially considering there were empty tables. The host came to refill our water glasses once -- after we'd paid the bill -- but that wasn't a big deal since we still had wine in our glasses!

The Ideal Place was recommended by some friends we respect so we gave it a shot, new to the area and looking for some awesome places to enjoy. With the reviews on here calling it 'high-end' I called first thing to reserve a table for my Husband and I. Let me just tell you how a first impression and a gut instinct are so very important...the phone was answered by someone screaming into the phone, cursing, laughing, banging pots over heard from the kitchen....I was just about to hang up when someone else gets on the phone with still a very loud voice, apologizes for his lack of phone skills...haha, ok so I make reservation. We arrive to the restaurant ( NO NEED to make a reservation for Saturday night, we were the only people there for at least 20 min). I could go on and on and on about every detail that made this a horrible experience, like the waitress seeming so rushed we had to yell our drink order as she was running around, which was funny because at that time there was only one other table....my plate was HORRIBLE as it seems the 'chef' overcooks everything. I admit I have diet issues so I was happy they offered gluten free pasta, un happy that is was WAY overcooked and slimy...learn your job 'chef'. The Greek Rotini is the most disgusting entree I have ever had at a restaurant. My Husband was pleased with his pork chop, dissatisfied when the waitress TOOK HIS PLATE AWAY WHILE HE WAS STILL EATING, FORK HOVERING BETWEEN PLATE AND MOUTH. Once again I'm stuck wondering if ALL restaurants in SW Michigan suck this bad, with crappy service, or have we just not found a single restaurant that would make me dine with them over my own kitchen. BTW our server is an older lady with blonde hair and she was one of the worst waitresses I have ever had, we normally tip 20% for mediocre service and I'm still pissed we left her anything at all. This place is in my list of TOP 5 MOST OVER-HYPED CRAPPY RESTAURANT OF ALL TIME! I will never be back and will tell everyone and anyone about what a huge rip off you are, you couldn't pay me the $130.00 we spent to ever eat there ever again. Oh why so expensive? We were charged all top shelf but were given bottom shelf. If you enjoy Vodka, you know what I'm talking about, you know the difference.

This is my new favorite place to go...we just celebrated my husband's birthday there last month and mine last night. Anthony at the door could not be more welcoming, especially after remembering you are a repeat customer. Our server Kelly has been our server every time we've been there and does an amazing job: friendly, knows her food and wines and is just attentive enough to make the meal pleasant. Anthony also has stopped by our table each time to see how everything is. But here's the thing - while the atmosphere and service are top notch, the menu is simply amazing. It changes daily. The breadth of dishes makes it impossible for someone to not find something they want. There are a ton of choices AND the quality of food is outstanding. If you are on Facebook, friend them and you will see gorgeous photos of the food every day. Or for "today's" menu go to their website. I could go in there every night! Great job Ideal Place! (oh and one last thought - the atmosphere and menu will also be great in the colder months!)

I was visiting some friends in Benton Harbor and they made the recommendation to go here. The meal started with some brie and it was fantastic. I had ordered the spinach salad with grilled chicken and it was very good. My friends ordered pork chops with peaches in a creamy sauce and she loved it but it wasn't for me. My friend ordered this pasta dish and she enjoyed it as well. We had the apple crisp for dessert and it was a huge order with a side of ice cream it was plenty for 2-3 people.

We dropped by here unexpectedly during a road trip and had one of the most pleasant dine-in experiences. The food is fabulous and the service is excellent. We will recommend the Manhattan seafood soup, sauteed butterfish, and chocolate fudge. Not to mentioned the appetizer bread is awesome too!

Yummy! I loved it here. It's very artsy. The martini's were delish and the bar staff let us sample their homemade syrups. The dining area is very nice and they accommodated our kids. I don't think I'd bring very small children here but our 5 and 10 year old were fine and well behaved. I had the steak and it was amazing. They prepared it perfectly! Their menu changes daily for the freshest selection. We devoured it all and had to meet the talented chef to thank her. She graciously came out to meet us. What a great place! Be sure to stop in and you will not regret it.

An unfortunate dining experience with appalling attitude and poor service. The saving grace of our entire dining experience was the change of waitstaff for our table, delicious seafood and a comped dessert. Despite these points, the restaurant is desperately grasping to be something it's not. Would it hurt for any one to perhaps put on a smile and at least look like they enjoy their job? Or, perhaps for out-of-towners or *gasp* dare I say anyone that looks foreign at the table, service/treatment is quite different. Our particular experience involved receiving a marinara dish instead of a meat ragu. Upon pointing this out, the dish was sent back to the kitchen and returned with apologies for confusion in the kitchen. The only thing was, it was the same marinara dish, just with meat added. The menu read differently - the two dishes receive different noodles. As a customer, if a dish is entered incorrectly am I to receive a slightly modified version of the wrong dish or a brand new dish? I'll let you ponder on that. Upon inquiring with multiple waitstaff, no one seemed to know which noodles went with what. Further asking our waiter - he insisted that that was what was ordered because that's what he wrote down. Throwing his hands in the air, as though we are just a finicky table, he went to have the correct dish entered as a new order. After speaking with the manager in regards of our server and the wrong food, again we were treated with somewhat of the spiel of "Well, your new food has already been entered..." To which the response, "It's not the food - it's the customer experience!". With which we were offered to have our server exchanged with another. Best move of the night. Our new server took care of business, collected plates, reissued flatware, the works. Once the correct dish came out - the Pasta Ragu overall impressions, just not a well pieced together plate. Yes, the menu mentions your plate will have Asiago cheese - but of all things that are pure and holy in culinary cuisine, don't overpower your plate with a layer of cheese! Unfortunately, I would venture to guess all pasta plates are coated heavily with asiago completely overpowering the dish. Beef chunks in the pasta, dry and just not working. Like the marinara sauce was cooked and a day old hamburger was chopped and thrown in. Moving forward, my wife and I will refer to this restaurant as "The NO Idea Place." As it seemed, through this and a few other experiences through the evening - no one seemed to have an idea. Overall atmosphere - eh. Attempts are made to be on the end of fine ambiance with artwork and black table cloth. Beyond that, just comes across as cheap. Seriously, pull back that tablecloth and the table will remind you of your desk from your school years. We won't be returning and unfortunately cannot recommend this place to any of our friends, acquaintances or Yelpers. Your price point and margins are too high for the level of service and quality of food overall.

What a gem! I was surprised this place was so empty on a Friday night. The Ideal Place made freshly baked rolls when we arrived and makes numerous in-house simple syrups for their cocktails. Their watermelon mojito was refreshing (fresh, simple, clean, and not too sweet). Their Seafood Pasta was delicious. It was a huge portion, but I managed to finish it because it just that good. It come with a meaty soft-shell crab on top that I thought was a great touch. Their Pork Chop with mashed potatoes and vegetables was also good. We received great service throughout our meal. What more can you ask for?

I am so glad I chose this place for dinner at the last minute! I noticed it online but it didn't really stand out to me. I asked a few locals where I should eat though and they all directed me here. The service was wonderful! I wish I could remember her name. I believe it was her first night too! The room was very comfortable with perfect lighting. We shared a few things... BBQ? Shrimp or New Orleans shrimp or something. It was amazing!!! Wedge salad. Steak with mashed potatoes. Cooked perfectly. Texas sheet cake and bread pudding. Both were amazing! We were so happy with the dinner here we probably talked about it all week! The wine list is nice and they offer local wines as well. This is a spot that can't be missed for dinner in the area!

My wife and I went here for a nice dinner on our annual Southwest Michigan Wine Weekend. We had high hopes based on the reviews here on Yelp. Unfortunately our experience at "The Ideal Place" was ANYTHING but ideal. I had called and made a reservation for my wife and I and when we got there we had to wait for a while to get our table - mind you this is in the fall - not during busy season, and there were some tables free in the front area. When we were finally seated, our table was right by the window in the back room and that area was cold since it was 30 degrees outside. On top of that, in the back room, in addition to my wife and I who were hoping to have romantic dinner, was a raucous group of eight who were in the area for a wedding which we could tell from their overly loud conversation. Add to the loud group the table next to them was a family with small children who were obviously over tired (our reservation was at 8pm) and overwhelmed by the volume of the group and as a result were crying. We wished we had a backup plan, but alas, we only locked in on this restaurant, otherwise we would have hit the road. We stayed for dinner and, in the end, would have probably had a better experience at a fast food place. We ended up giving up on having any conversation and the food was underwhelming, at best and horrible at best. My wife wanted to go light and she ordered a soup and salad and I ordered the Asian ribs. We waited a long time and then my wife's soup came out before we ever saw the basket of rolls - we would have asked for them sooner, but our waitress was non-existent for long stretches. Just two minutes later her salad and my entree arrived, before she even made a dent in it. Her salad was good, but not great, but my ribs were the epitome of horrible. Either I was there on a bad day or the previous reviewers wouldn't know a good rib it hit them. My ribs were overcooked, mealy, and obviously boiled prior to being tossed on the grill and sauced. It is a shame because the sauce had a good flavor.

I was in Benton Harbor for my weekly business trip and stayed late so I yelped restaurants in the area and The Ideal Place popped up. It was Wednesday and the special is Asian Ribs. Absolutely outstanding! Check out the photo I took. $2.50 Craft Pints & $5 Martinis too. Parked right in front. No meter. The decor is minimal but very attractive with exposed brick walls and interesting art displayed around the dining room and bar. Service was friendly and attentive.

This has become one of my husband's-and-my go-to restaurants in the area. There is, in fairness, a certain desire to encourage the Benton Harbor business base, and the restaurants in the area....but the food would be worth the trip even without that concern! We have been here several times over the past year and a half, and reservations have never seemed to be necessary, though we often do come mid-week, or after the usual dinner surge in this area. My husband likes the Asian ribs, and we've come a couple of times just for that when they're on special. The Flintstone (braised lamb shank) is amazing! We've both tried it and loved it: melt off the bone tender, and clearly lamb while not being overpowering, as mutton often is.

My husband heard good things about this place from some coworkers so we decided to give it a try. We arrived at 5:30 to beat the dinner rush, and were immediately shown a table. Our waitress was very friendly. The food was SO DECADENT. It was really a delicious evening. I'm only giving Ideal Place 3 stars (after debating between 3 and 4 for a very long time) because the food was pretty heavy on the salt, butter, and sauces. The flavors were fantastic, and I really don't think they needed to resort to such obvious tactics to up the deliciousness factor. It was already there! In addition the prices were quite high, comparable to NYC restaurant prices, and I didn't feel the desserts were that amazing -- just standard cookies, chocolate cakes, etc. Conclusion: I would definitely come back, especially given Benton Harbor's limited fine dining options -- but I would be SO MUCH HAPPIER and a complete devotee if they could go a little lighter on the sauces and emphasize the quality and flavors of their ingredients a bit more.

Tried The Ideal Place for the first time last evening. We didn't need a reservation or have to wait at around 730pm on a Saturday night but the place was busy, most tables were full. The cute bar area greets you as you walk in . The decor is minimal but very attractive with exposed brick walls and interesting art displayed around the dining room and bar. Our server was very friendly and somewhat knowledgeable about the menu. I wasn't impressed with the wine list but we ordered a local Chardonnay and a Shiraz blend and both were ok. Most of the labels I would have selected were too pricey. The menu is small but has several pasta, fish and meat selections to choose from. We didn't try any appetizers this time but did start with a Spinach Salad that was excellent. Our entrees were the Ideal Pasta and the Sea Bass. The pasta was good - it bit too heavy for my taste - which I somewhat expected when the menu described the "basil cream sauce" but when it arrived at the table, it was covered with alot of grated cheese - much more than the dish needed. My advice to the chef would be - go lighter on the cheese and give the patron some on the side to add more if that's their preference. The portion size was generous and the peas, prosciutto, mushrooms and onions that came in the dish were also plentiful. My husband enjoyed the Sea Bass but said it was dry, which is unusual since it is such an oily fish. We were too full for dessert but there were lots of creative choices on the menu. I think we'll try The Ideal Place again when we're in the area - it was good enough for a return visit and the great restaurant choices in the area are very limited.

The Ideal Place has a very modern feel to the interior and local brews on tap at all times. Pretzel rolls: oh my God...amazing and soft Oysters appetizer: before tonight, I had never tried oysters. These were simply delicious and tasty. Veggie Spring Rolls: the rolls themselves were just perfect - light, fresh and a bit of crunch. The dipping sauce paired well with the rolls. Cream of Asparagus soup: my favorite of the night (in season) Hawaiian Butterfish: fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the small salad with kalamata olives was good, the zucchini relish was light and crunchy. Very well put together dish that I heard never goes off of the menu The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Don't miss The Ideal Place.

Love going here Wednesday for the rib special and microbrew special , wife likes the raw oysters. Have been here several times fir the shrimp poor-boys and s few micro Michigan beers. Attended a Shorts microbrew and food paring last fall . It was outstanding
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I haven't tried anything that I haven't liked and the drinks and beer selections are always great. The ribs are awesome and so is the pasta. We really enjoy sitting at the bar when Jason is bar tending, he's great!

My favorite restaurant in town. Great bar seen. Amazing high quality dinning. Gives me the feel of Chicago when I can't get the the city. The bartender Jason is amazing. Great food, art district. Can't go wrong with any meal or just coming in for a cocktail after work. Also great rotating micro-brew selection, and creative spirit mixes. The Asian-ribs or lamb shank are a must order.

I was so disappointed! At first it seemed great. It was very crowded and the atmosphere was fun, very arts district. The menu looked good but the food just lacked finesse. The spring roll, which should have been crispy, was soggy with oil. The sauce was mostly ketchup. The buffalo meatballs had the most bizarre, overpowering seasoning that really clashed with the overly acidic sauce. I couldn't hardly eat two bites. The cheesecake tasted like it was straight out of a box and all the toppings were so sweet they squashed any subtle flavors that may have been there. Because this place is trying to be top notch and charging top notch prices, I think it is worth pointing out that the food is just not quite there yet. I see potential though!

Super restaurant!!!! Can't wait to go back again and again. Love that the menu is forever changing, and not one of my meals has ever been disappointing! The food and prices are better then most downtown chicago restaurants and the ambiance is awesome. Portions are totally worth more then you pay.

April 25, 2012 - This is a gem of the Benton Harbor Arts District. I stop in multiple times a week. My favorites are the filet, the halibut and the risotto. Once they put tiramisu on their desert menu I will be able to give THE IDEAL PLACE 5 stars May 31, 2012 - I just went back and they put tiramisu on the desert menu (after I asked them to) and it was amazing - so 5 stars they get from me (and their asian ribs are amazing)

How did it take me so long to get to The Ideal Place for dinner? Aside from the somewhat cheesy name (excuse me if I'm missing some hidden meaning), this is the best dinner that I've had in the St. Joseph / Benton Harbor area. The decor is contemporary and clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I was very pleased to see the restaurant busy on a Wednesday night since I hope this place is here to stay. Or maybe it was just the $5 martini specials during the week which is pretty awesome. For starters, the beet salad was nice however I thought it would be more beets and less greens. It was good nonetheless (and the small was actually quite big). The pizza was excellent, with a thin crust cooked nicely and flavorful toppings. For mains, I was pleasantly surprised to see a shorter list of options on the menu, and found a number of things that looked very tasty. Good sign that this is a place that knows what its good at. I had the salmon of the day which was nicely prepared and relatively healthy for a change! Definitely check out this little gem in downtown Benton Harbor.

This place was a great disappointment! We arrived and were asked was this it are all the guests here? The host was referring to me and my children.(FYI we always dine together at excellent restaurants and love food) So he proceeds to seat us in the back room in the corner. Sorry Charlie, but treat us all equally! Not impressed with the service, food basic, interior plain and music loud. Not anything unusual, not prompt service and really nothing special with the food etc. Sorry host or sorry charlie, next year i'm coming with the kids & will come back an object to our seating placement, food and drinks. What comes around goes around..... Barf!

I came into town to introduce my significant who is from Las Vegas, to my Mom and chose the Ideal Place as the setting of this very nerve racking occasion. I was almost immediately greeted by one of the main chefs with a hug, the atmosphere was very calm and relaxing. Our server Emily was very sweet and seemed extremely knowledgable about the menu. I ordered the Monk fish, it was amazing, I would suggest it to anyone. I did not feel the cost of food was over the top either, very affordable for any occasion! The ombiance of this establishment, the quality of food, and the level of service made my special occasion perfect! Thank you for alleviating all of my stress, what a great job!!! :)

Amazing service, quaint atmosphere, and delicious food!! Our eyes literally rolled to the back of our heads as we ate our baked oyster appetizer. I had the seared butterfish and she had the bleu fish filet. Everything was fabulous and our server Emily was sweeter than our ever so tasty apple crisp. Perfect place to eat if you're in the area.

Love this place! Sorta hope the secret doesn't get out, this place is fabulous. Fresh seafood, fresh oysters, great service I could on and on. My only compliant- the wine list stinks. Seriously, you are in the heart of southwest Michigan wine country have better wines/ local wines on your list!

My husband took me here tonight for our anniversary. The egg roll appetizer ($8.00) was good (served with soy sauce and sweet and sour sauce, not ketchup like another user wrongly stated). My husband loved his soup. The complimentary rolls were so-so (I think they make them with Bisquick; at least they tasted a bit like pancake mix). My Dover Sole entree was not the greatest. Actually, I couldn't finish it. It sort of grossed me out. Too soggy and rich, if that makes sense. Conversely, my husband said if he were rating, he'd give this place 5 stars. He really loved his rib order (roughly $23.00), and they gave two generous slab portions loaded with tender meat. It also came with homemade Cajun chips, which were stale and bland. Overall, I agree with my husband. I tried his ribs and they were pretty good. I think if you dine here, order the ribs, you won't be disappointed.

On the suggestion of our hotel sales woman, we chose to have dinner here for our anniversary. I love the feel of this place, quaint, clean, and because it's in the art district, local art on the walls. Bartender was quite friendly as we waited for our table. The host was a nice fellow who gave us a few wine suggestions, and chatted with my husband about the local beer selections. The service was good, knowledgeable, not over the top or pretentious. I felt bad because she had to refill our water often. We were at a wine festival earlier in the day. Full sun+wine=some thirsty mofos. For starters, we ordered the soft shell crab over garlic bread. It was good, but not spectacular. We also ordered raw oysters, it was our anniversary after all! I ordered a short rib pasta dish which I thought was great. My husband ordered the mussels and a side of pasta with the same sauce. He loved his side of pasta. The mussels were perfect, but the sauce that the mussels were drowned in, was thick and the flavor was so robust, it over powered the delicacy of the mussel. It was a good sauce though. Overall we enjoyed ourselves and left just in time to avoid the party of eight soccer moms who were cackling it up. *Side note, we had to ask for bread and when she gave us the bill there was a $1.50 charge for two small slightly hardened pretzel rolls. wth? Service a well deserved 4stars, food 3.5.

This place could have gotten one more star, as the food was decent. Nothing mind-blowing, but it was better than I had expected. Unfortunately the service was lacking. On it's own this would not have been a deal-breaker, but the lack of professionalism and respect between co-workers as a result of the situation was. Our table was missed somehow, when only three other tables were occupied. This was noticed by another server, who did come apologize and fill our waters. Unfortunately this was through gritted teeth and hardly seemed genuine as this person seemed more occupied with venting about the situation and placing blame. Without going into detail, our server also attempted to shuffle blame back around when he missed something a bit later. I'd much prefer the staff take ownership of an issue as an establishment, instead of tossing blame back and forth. On that note, I am not from the area. I grew up in a much larger city and maybe the small-town effect here is that they felt comfortable being more casual. Regardless, being neglected for 10-15 minutes is easily fixed. Comp a dish, bring something special out, or buy the table some drinks. Couple that with a sincere apology and all is usually forgotten. Turn it into a blame game where your employee relationships are clearly obvious to the diners and it just becomes hard to watch. They did end up giving us a dessert on the house...well, half a dessert. It was missing the gelato. Apparently they were out. Off night, I guess.

Excellent food! I had the Lamb shank and it was delicious. Also had my first taste of Escargot and I was not disappointed. Overall the atmosphere was great and I will be back for more!

I love this place. My entire meal was great. I didn't do a very good job splitting the grilled oysters or bread pudding. The butter fish was great too.

I brought my 3 year old here for her birthday and the servers made her feel really special :) we had spaghetti and Asian ribs and the house chips and home made rolls. Yum yum yum! I overheard my server, Ashley, giving another customer an explanation about the menu and it was clear she was very knowledgable and passionate about the food and what makes The Ideal Place so special. A very good experience and we would recommend it to anyone! It doesn't appear to be a very kid friendly place but they went out of their way to turn any dish into a kids portion and give her chocolate milk in a to go coffee cup with a crazy straw. Very sweet. We loved it!

This place was great! I had the lobster and crawfish bisque. It was not creamy, but very good and filling. We went during $5 martini's. I had the Pomegranite. It had pineapple and pomegranate juice. Very yummy! My husband got 6 oysters and I tried the charbroiled one and it was AMAZING and I usually don't like oysters. For my entree I had the Blueberry and Corn Salad. It was very light and filling. I wish I would has specified that I wanted the smaller portion though. My husband had the Marlin which was cooked very well.

My favorite place for a martini and meal in the Benton Harbor Arts District. I'd bring everyone here - my grandma, a date, a client. The food is so excellent, especially the fish. It's small, cozy, downtown and their service is the best around.

friendly, prompt service, in a lovely old building, with exposed brick walls.my friend has been there many times, and has talked about it forever. it's her favorite, and I could see why. my "wedge" salad was actually romaine, fanned around the plate, topped with bacon, carrots, and blue cheese dressing. it was picture perfect, and delicious. my friend had a wonderful soup with eggplant and sausage...to die for. she also had the ideal pasta dish...delicious. I had the fried oyster po' boy with a delicious remoulade, on a garlic roll. it was tasty, but I would have either liked bigger oysters, or more of the smallish ones that it came with. very nice chardonnay, as well. just a really nice lunch in all respects.

Excellent food and service, butterfish, seafood pasta and fish & chips were all superb! You will not be disappointed.

(5)Tim B.

(1)Scott S.

A great place to go and have drinks. The food has also been very good the couple times I have eaten there. Easily one of the top places in the area!

(4)Yi Jie T.
(5)May K.

Really great meal in a sleepy small town. My steak was cooked perfectly and the service was exceptional. Will definitely be back when I'm in BH.
(4)Richard A.
(2)Emily P.
(4)Melissa B.

(5)JJ Q.

I have been from Michigan, to Scottsdale, AZ/ Phoenix and All of Florida.....it was the absolute best Clam Chowder I have ever had. Price point soooo reasonable. $7.00

Decent, but Pretty expensive drinks. Staff seemed unhappy...
(2)G S.

Had the sea bass it was very good portion size was good our server was outstanding Like the atmosphere casual but not overly so. My husband had the seafood pasta and loved it is a very large portion with scallops shrimp and soft shell crab
(4)Joni T.
One of my very favorite restaurants in the area. Everything I've eaten has been wonderful...my favorite dish is the Asian ribs - yum! Great atmosphere combines big city sophistication with small town charm - you'll always feel welcome.
(4)Rick S.
Love going here Wednesday for the rib special and microbrew special , wife likes the raw oysters. Have been here several times fir the shrimp poor-boys and s few micro Michigan beers. Attended a Shorts microbrew and food paring last fall . It was outstanding

We were in town for the Ironman event and stopped in for some dinner and drinks. This place is exactly what we needed!! Fantastic beers on tap and the Steamed Mussels sautéed in a spicy capered marinara sauce was absolutely phenomenal. My friend had the sea bass which was equally as amazing!! great night!!
(5)Gabby G.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I haven't tried anything that I haven't liked and the drinks and beer selections are always great. The ribs are awesome and so is the pasta. We really enjoy sitting at the bar when Jason is bar tending, he's great!
(5)Brian B.
(5)Lily K.
